Frequently Asked Questions!
Why does it seem like JAWS no longer shows all the links that were previously displayed when I go to frequently visited Web sites?
On Web pages you frequently visit, it appears that JAWS no longer shows all of the links that were previously displayed with earlier versions of JAWS. You notice a difference due to the evolution of the Internet, as well as Web applications. Web designers are using an event called "OnMouseOver." This allows the designers to group specific links into a category such as:
- Support
- Contact us
- Sales
- Product Information
And when the mouse is hovered over this link, it will visually display a list of additional links, thus creating a more efficient and less convoluted Web page.
Freedom Scientific has taken JAWS to a new level by utilizing this new Internet method with changes that began with JAWS version 8.0. In addition, a new keystroke, CTRL+JAWS Key+ENTER, is available, which will activate the OnMouseOver link as if a sighted person were hovering the mouse over the link. Once the keystroke is pressed, JAWS will announce that the page has changed in some fashion by displaying additional information, and it will state the line the new information is on. At this point, the JAWS user can use the Navigation Quick Key ‘J’, to open the Jump To dialog box, then type the line number where JAWS indicates the new information's location, and then press ENTER to move to that point. Once at this point, the user can use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to review the additional information, and press ENTER on the desired option, or if an option is not desired, the user can press the Navigation Quick Key SHIFT+J to move back to the starting point.
For more information about the OnMouseOver event, use the following link to visit the Freedom Scientific Surf's Up Web page, which provides an example page to practice with, in addition to much more information.

What can I do if typing echo and navigation in Windows Vista seems sluggish?!
On some Windows Vista computers that have the Sigma Tel Audio Codec, JAWS is sluggish when you type or use the ARROW keys to navigate through a document or dialog box. In addition, there can be a delayed response when selecting the PC Cursor (NUM PAD PLUS) or the JAWS Cursor (NUM PAD MINUS). When Vista was developed, Microsoft rewrote the entire audio stack. Now, you need a driver that is capable of making the necessary calls to the API or you will get latency in your audio.
If you have a Dell Dimension or Dell Inspiron computer with a Sigma Tel sound card that exhibits this problem, use the following links to download the appropriate driver:

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R157031.EXEIf you have a different computer, please contact your vender to inquire about an updated driver. An updated audio driver will not only improve JAWS performance, but will improve overall audio performance as well.
