JAWS on a USB Memory Stick, plus our Special Offer

How would you like to carry your personalised copy of JAWS with you wherever you go, and use it on any computer any time?

JAWS 7 comes with a USB Memory Stick version (AKA JAWS for USB Thumb Drive). This is fully functional JAWS, with your own personal settings and scripts which is saved onto an ordinary USB Memory Stick (any with more than 128MB will do). The advantages of portability, particularly at work or in education, are significant.

JAWS does not have to be set up on any computer – you carry it with you! You will however need to have (at least temporarily) Administrator Rights to install one or two driver files that are required. Once done, this won’t need to be done again for that particular PC.

If you already have JAWS 7.0 you can read more technical information on installing and using the JAWS Thumb Drive by going to your JAWS help. In the search box type "JAWS for USB Thumb Drives", there you will find a comprehensive list of questions and answers on JAWS for USB thumb drives and instructions on how to get started.

To celebrate this fantastic new feature Quantum is giving the first twenty people to purchase or upgrades to JAWS 7.0, in February, a free Quantum USB Memory Stick!

Quantum’s JAWS Tip

Using Custom Labels in Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer

JAWS enables you to label your own links, form fields, poorly labelled links.

For comprehensive training with practical exercises open your local drive (x:\Program File\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\7.0\Training\ENU\whatisnew\ XTraCustomLabelsWordIE\03_custom_labels.htm or 03_custom_labels.mp3.

(Where x is the letter of the drive where your program files are installed.)

If you did not install the training materials when you first installed JAWS you can copy them from your JAWS 6.0 or higher CD. They are located in the following folders (Where D is the letter of your CD drive): D:\Training\What's New.

Our top JAWS user tip

Ross Miller is the author of our user’s tip.

He wins a Quantum Technology 128 MB USB memory stick.

"Here is a useful tip for those who operate their PCs with numerous open windows. As a professional, I find I have Outlook, Access, Explorer, Excel, Word and sometimes several pages in each all open at once. I often need to jump between two specific applications with speed and accuracy. This cannot be done with just the use of the alt&tab keys to spin the applications around, especially if you have so many open. It can take forever to get to what you want.

The tip:

Open the primary application you need to keep returning to.

Then use the Insert F10 list to choose the alternative application and click enter.

Then use the alt & TAB key to rotate around between the two specific applications without visiting other open applications

You will then only rotate around the two nominated applications using the standard alt & Tab keys.

To escape this fixed rotation between the two specific applications, restart the insert F10 and choose other applications as you need them. This process is extremely handy when transferring data between or comparing data between two different applications."

Please send your JAWS tips to win your own Quantum USB Memory stick to bdavies@quantumtechnology.com.au
