Mountbatten Brailler to Conquer the World! [0]
In Favor of Using A Mountbatten Braille System, By Karyl Loux [0]

More Than Just a Brailler

My daughter has just received a Mountbatten brailler. She 6 yrs old and is learning to read and write with both print and braille despite being told by professionals not to bother with braille.

She took part in the American National Federation for the Blind (NFB) "Braille Readers Are Leaders 2006 Program" in order to raise awareness about Braille in the UK and to raise money for her own Mountbatten Brailler.

We wanted her to have one because it is more than just a brailler, it is a braille learning centre. She can learn braille at her pace and in a more natural way as it promotes self-learning. It speaks to her and as she types a letter, she knows she is writing correctly and she loves this aural feedback. It seems to me that parents/educators may not be aware that the Mountbatten is easier to use than a Perkins at a young age and has a lot to offer. Adaptive technology devices are essential literacy tools for blind children. They are used from the beginning of literacy and right through life.

A petition created by myself and other parents in the UK, has received over 3000 signatures and the parents continue to ask why registered blind children are not learning braille, even when they cannot keep up with their peers by print alone.
